Pauline was recently invited aboard the new Explora I for a voyage around the Greek Islands—an experience that completely changed her perception of cruising.

The journey began with a BA flight to Athens and a pre-cruise stay at the One & Only Aesthesis in Glyfada. Just 30 minutes from the Acropolis, this beachfront retreat feels worlds away from the city. The resort’s spacious bungalows with private pools offer a tranquil escape. Dinner at Manko, its vibrant Peruvian beach club, set the perfect tone for the trip. The next morning, we boarded the Explora I in Piraeus for our eight-day journey. Check-in was seamless and our Ocean Suite with private terrace felt more like a boutique hotel than a traditional cruise cabin. With 461 oceanfront suites, each featuring a lavish bathroom, walk-in shower, heated floors and plush bathrobes every detail exudes luxury.

Explora currently has two ships, with four more planned by 2028. Onboard, guests enjoy four pools, six restaurants, 12 bars and lounges and a variety of entertainment and activities. Evenings feature live music, an excellent resident band and a nightclub for those who want to keep the night going.

Dining is exceptional and all the restaurants are included except for one tasting menu experience. Even the buffet was excellent, offering an overwhelming selection of gourmet dishes. With a 1.25 to 1 guest-to-host ratio, service was truly unparalleled, delivered by the happiest and most attentive staff I’ve encountered.

Our itinerary covered Volos, Marmaris, Santorini, Paros and Milos with daily stopovers and a day at sea. Excursions were easy to arrange or you could simply explore at your own pace. The beauty of cruising is that you’re enjoying a different experience every day without the hassle of packing and unpacking.

I never considered myself a cruise person but with a smaller vessel like Explora 1 and such personal service, I’m officially converted!
