Mauritius – our top spots

Between us, we feel we know the island of Mauritius pretty well and have our own favourites when it comes to hotels.  Here are is a whistle stop tour of our top spots:

Lux Resorts

Jackie loves the three Lux properties.  Lux La Morne is located on the south west coast, Lux Grand Gaube on the north east coast and Lux Belle Mare on the east.  They are all good 5* hotels with a stream of Lux “quirkiness” running through them all. The hotels’ Café Lux offers a Lux version of a high street coffee brand and the ICI ice cream parlour serves the most delicious ice cream and sorbets. Cinema Paradiso screens films under the stars and the “phone home” red telephone box allows a complimentary telephone call home.

One&Only St Geran

Another of Jackie’s favourites is One&Only Saint Geran – this established hotel on the east coast has been recently refurbished to an outstanding standard which runs throughout the accommodation, restaurants and bars.  The ambience is wonderful and carries on late into the evening when the band stops playing.  The buffet and a la carte breakfast service is excellent too.

Four Seasons Anahita

For those who prefer a less conventional style hotel, Jackie suggests Four Seasons Anahita, also on the east coast.  The beautiful accommodation is villa style with individual pools and all are very private.  The resort is perfect for golf lovers and those that enjoy relaxing on the beach.  A new private beach located on Ile Aux Cerfs is now open too.  This is a top choice for Four Seasons fans.

The St Regis Mauritius Resort

One of Jeanne’s favourites is the St Regis Mauritius Resort.  It is located in the south, a very beautiful part of the island with Le Morne mountain right behind the hotel and beautiful sea views overlooking the reef. The rooms at the St Regis are very spacious and well equipped and all staff including the personal butlers are very helpful and friendly.  The boathouse bar and grill is the perfect beachside restaurant and the food is superb. The hotel has a great beach and combines all the best qualities of casual luxury.

Le Telfair

Le Telfair, member of the Small Luxury Hotel consortium, is gorgeous.  Also located on the south, the hotel is small and newly renovated in chic colonial style with gorgeous rooms, a lovely beach, fabulous spa and casual yet elegant restaurants.  Children are well catered for at Le Telfair with an amazing childrens’ club which takes babies from newborn at no additional supplement.

Constance Prince Maurice

Another of Jeanne’s favourites is the Constance Prince Maurice – a great all-rounder with a lovely authentic and classic Mauritian feel but still up to date and well maintained.   The lagoon area is really lovely and offers lagoon suites as well as an atmospheric floating restaurant and bar.  Lunch in the wine cellar is not to be missed!

20 Degrees Sud

If you are looking for something more personal we can all recommend 20 Degrees Sud in the north.  Charming, tasteful and intimate, 20 Degrees Sud is perfect for all couples, young or old, looking for a smaller hotel with a more personal approach than some of the larger hotels on the island.

Just a note on the weather.  The weather in the east can be a little cloudy during the UK summer months but still nice and warm at a balmy 24 – 26°C.  On the west coast the skies seemed bluer during our most recent visit, the temperature a few degrees higher and it was a little less windy.  So, the old adage ‘west is best’ is true during our UK summer months but the situation reverses in our winter time when the east coast generally enjoys better weather.

Apart from golf and water sports, Mauritius can offer a host of exhilarating land activities including zip wiring and quad biking.  The island is a great year round destination with something for everyone and particularly good for families who prefer cooler temperatures during our summer time.
